The “optimisation of recovery” is the therapeutic mission of critical care medicine. The goal is not merely “survival”. The mortality rate or its reduction alone is not a robust indicator of the country’s quality of critical care service. The morbidity matters most. We review here the basic principles of critical care associated with its historical milestones and measures undertaken by communities worldwide to enhance cost-effectiveness by adopting suitable education models that cater to the escalating demand.
